AS SOUTHEAST ASIA HEATS UP, A JAPANESE COOLING GIANT SEES A MAJOR OPPORTUNITY

The rapid increase in air-conditioning use across Southeast Asia reflects rising temperatures, urbanization, and economic growth, creating significant opportunities for manufacturers, including Japanese companies expanding into emerging markets such as Cambodia. As extreme heat becomes more frequent due to climate change, access to cooling is increasingly viewed as essential for health and productivity. However, this growing demand also raises serious sustainability concerns. Increased reliance on air-conditioning contributes to higher electricity consumption and carbon emissions, which can further intensify global warming. While governments and industry players are promoting energy-efficient cooling technologies and setting emissions-reduction targets, balancing economic development, climate responsibility, and equitable access to cooling remains a major challenge. Long-term solutions will require innovation, policy support, and regional cooperation to reduce environmental impact while meeting rising cooling needs.
